Giant Hogweed

Giant Hogweed is a highly invasive plant that poses serious risks to both people and the environment.

Native to Asia, Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) has rapidly spread across North America and Europe, often thriving in wetland areas, along roadsides, and in disturbed soils. This aggressive plant can grow up to 5m tall, producing large, umbrella-like clusters of white flowers. While it may appear striking, Giant Hogweed is dangerous due to the toxic sap it produces, which can cause severe skin burns, blisters, and permanent scarring when exposed to sunlight.

Why Giant Hogweed is a Problem

Leaves contain toxic sap that can burn skin
Hogweed spreads aggressively before flowering
Flower heads release thousands of seeds
  • Public Health Hazard: The sap of Giant Hogweed contains furanocoumarins, chemicals that make the skin highly sensitive to sunlight, leading to painful burns and blisters (Phytophotodermatytys).
  • Environmental Impact: Giant Hogweed can outcompete native plants by rapidly growing and spreading, altering local ecosystems and reducing biodiversity.
  • Difficult to Control: Because it produces so many seeds, the plant can quickly spread across large areas, making it challenging to manage once established.
  • Legal Responsibility: Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to plant or allow Giant Hogweed to spread in the wild. Landowners have a duty to control it.

Treatment & Control Methods

Herbicide Treatment

  • A herbicide treatment is the most effective method of long-term control of Giant Hogweed.
  • Requires repeated applications during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Must be carried out by trained and qualified professionals due to health risks and legal requirements.

Removal & Disposal

  • Cutting or strimming Giant Hogweed is extremely dangerous and not recommended.
  • Excavation and removal to licensed landfill sites may be required in some cases.
  • All waste must be classified and disposed of as controlled waste under the Environmental Protection Act.

Before quoting a treatment or removal and disposal cost we would need to conduct a site survey. Landtech (UK) Limited offer effective solutions for managing Giant Hogweed. Our experienced team offers a range either physical removal, chemical treatments, and strategic monitoring to prevent the spread of this invasive species.
